Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries are the most common type of mobility scooter batteries and electric wheelchair batteries on the market today.
How AGM Batteries Work
AGM technology uses a fibreglass mat to absorb the battery's electrolyte solution, making them spill-proof and safer than traditional flooded lead-acid batteries.
Advantages of AGM Batteries
Disadvantages of AGM Batteries
Best For:
Occasional users, indoor mobility scooters, budget-conscious buyers, and those with shorter daily travel distances.
Gel mobility batteries use silica to create a gel-like electrolyte, offering superior performance in challenging conditions.
How Gel Batteries Work
The gelled electrolyte won't leak even if the battery case is damaged, and provides excellent deep-discharge recovery capabilities whilst allowing the battery to be placed on its side or even upside down. The electrolyte in a gel cell battery has a silica additive added to it, causes it to set like jelly or stiffen slightly. It is because of this that the recharge voltages are often lower than the other lead acid batteries to prevent the gel electrolyte from liquefying and consequently damaging the battery.
Advantages of Gel Batteries
Disadvantages of Gel Batteries
Best For:
Outdoor enthusiasts, users in extreme climates, powerchairs requiring reliable deep-cycle performance, daily users of their mobility scooter and seasonal users who store equipment for extended periods.
Lithium batteries for mobility represent the latest advancement in mobility power technology, offering game-changing benefits for active users.
How Lithium Batteries Work
Using lithium-ion or lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry, these batteries deliver exceptional energy density with minimal weight.
Advantages of Lithium Mobility Batteries
Disadvantages of Lithium Batteries
Best For:
Frequent users, travellers, those wanting maximum range per charge, users who need lightweight solutions, and anyone seeking the best long-term value.
Proper mobility battery maintenance significantly extends battery life regardless of type.
Universal Best Practices for All Mobility Batteries
Charging Guidelines
Storage Tips
Usage Recommendations
Watch for these signs that indicate your mobility scooter battery replacement is due:
>Reduced range: Not traveling as far on a full charge
>Slower speed: Noticeable decrease in top speed
>Longer charging times: Takes significantly longer to reach full charge
>Physical damage: Cracks, bulging, or leaking
>Age: Approaching or exceeding expected lifespan
>Frequent low battery warnings: Even after full charge
Consider Your Usage Pattern
Occasional Users (1-2 times per week):
AGM or Gel batteries offer good value
Gel preferred for longer storage periods
Regular Users (Daily use):
Gel batteries provide best short term value
Lithium batteries provide best long-term value
AGM suitable for budget-conscious users but batteries will need to be renewed more frequently.
Heavy Users (Multiple trips daily):
Lithium batteries strongly recommended
Fast charging and extended lifespan pay off quickly
Travellers:
Lithium batteries for weight savings. There are size restrictions for air travel though.
Makes transport significantly easier
Consider Your Environment
Primarily Indoor Use:
AGM batteries perfectly adequate
Lower cost justified by lighter demands
All-Weather Outdoor Use:
Gel batteries excel in temperature extremes
Lithium also performs well with their modern BMS
Hilly Terrain:
Lithium maintains consistent power on inclines so less reduction in speed
AGM/Gel may show voltage drop on steep hills
Total Cost of Ownership Comparison
While lithium batteries cost more upfront, let's look at the 6-year cost comparison for a pair of 34ah batteries:
AGM Batteries (6-year cost)
Initial purchase: £150-£190
Replacements needed: 2 sets
Total cost: £300-380
Cost per year: £50-63
Gel Batteries (6-year cost)
Initial purchase: £250-300
Replacements needed: 2 set
Total cost: £500-600
Cost per year: £83-100
Lithium Batteries (6-year cost)
Initial purchase: £600-700
Replacements needed: 0 sets
Total cost: £600-700
Cost per year: £100-116
Plus lithium offers: lighter weight, faster charging, better performance, and often extends into year 7+

How long do mobility scooter batteries last?
AGM: 2-3 years | Gel: 3-4 years | Lithium: 7+ years (with proper care)
Can I upgrade from AGM to lithium batteries?
Often yes, but you'll need a compatible lithium charger and to check your scooter's specifications. Contact us for model-specific advice.
Should I replace both batteries at once?
Yes, always replace batteries in pairs to ensure balanced performance and avoid damaging the new battery.
How do I dispose of old mobility batteries?
Old batteries must be disposed of properly at designated recycling points – never in general waste. Your local council waste recycling centre will accept your old batteries.
What size battery do I need?
Check your current battery for voltage (usually 12V) and amp-hour rating (Ah). Your user manual will also specify requirements. We can help identify the right match if you know your scooter or powerchair make and model.

What our customers have to say about us
Absolutely brilliant service. Site easy to use. I ordered 2 new batteries mid-morning on a Monday and they were delivered the next day before 10am!. Excellent service all round. Thank You.
We couldn't believe the service we got. Ordering some new tyres for my wife's mobility scooter - not only were they half as much as most other places including eBay and Amazon but we made the order at about lunch time on the Wednesday and they arrived on Thursday morning. Very impressed and we would definitely use again.
I'm so glad I chose Lifelight to get my scooter from, the staff were most helpful and after a minor hiccup my scooter came. They even sent an engineer out because I had problems with assembly, stupidly, my fault. There was no charge for it and the engineer kindly did an all over check to make sure everything was set up right and gave me exact instructions on various functions so everything was clear and I understood. I would recommend them very highly to anyone considering getting a scooter.
What brilliant service. We needed a wheelchair for my mother and had no idea what to get. Gary was most helpful and we got to try several different types before we made a decision however the one we wanted was out of stock with the manufacturer for another two weeks. Gary very helpfully suggested we take the demonstration model until ours arrived which we did, for no extra cost! When ours did arrive Lifelight delivered it to us and took their loan one back. Fantastic service and at a brilliant price. We would recommend Lifelight to everyone.
