AGM batteries use a glass fibre mat to hold the electrolyte against the plates, which improves safety and electrical efficiency. Compared with standard sealed lead acid cells, AGMs are better at handling shock and vibration, often tolerate deeper discharges, and can offer a longer useful life — all useful where mobility equipment is used frequently or over uneven surfaces.

A key stage in lead acid battery production is the electrochemical formation of the plates. AGM batteries are filled with electrolyte and placed in controlled baths to begin formation. Temperature control during this stage matters because it affects factors such as PbO2 conversion, water loss and the stability of additives. Too high a temperature can degrade additives and shorten battery life, so optimising the formation process helps improve both efficiency and long-term performance. It is always best to charge your batteries at the end of every day that you use them, irrespective of how far you have travelled. Your charger should switch to float mode when the batteries are fully charged so they can be left to charge overnight if need be. Avoid removing your charger before the batteries are fully charged or only charging every few days as this will shorten the productive life of your batteries.
Use a charger designed specifically for sealed lead acid batteries. Many modern chargers support both AGM and SLA profiles and use multi-stage charging to protect the battery from overcharge. Where possible, choose a smart charger that detects battery type and automatically adjusts the charge phases — and always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. The original charger supplied with your scooter or powerchair by the manufacturer is always the best one.
Avoid Deep Discharges: Recharge when the battery reaches around 50% charge rather than letting it run so low that your scooter or powerchair cuts out. Never let your batteries go completely flat as this will render them useless.
